How to Join
We're always happy to hear from people excited about computational genomics, data science, and bioinformatics algorithms. Contact Jim at the email provided on this site.
Strong foundational knowledge in some quantitative field (e.g., algorithms, math, statistics, or machine learning) is required for joining the lab. No strict biology background is necessary. Nevertheless, our lab works in an interdisciplinary space where our algorithms directly impact microbiology research. Therefore, curiosity about biology, microbes, and genomics is highly encouraged.
PhD Students (Recruiting for Fall 2027)
Prospective PhD students should apply directly through the Department of Computer Science graduate admissions process at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and mention your interest in working with Jim Shaw in your application.
Postdoctoral Fellows
We welcome postdoctoral applicants with backgrounds in computer science, mathematics, statistics, or computational genomics who are interested in developing methods and software for sequence analysis. Please email a CV, a short description of your research interests, and 1-2 (non-AI written) paragraphs indicating why you'd be a good fit.
